Artifacted digital photograph.
A while back a friend called from downtown Portland and told me that an all-white praying mantis had flown in her 7th-story window. I had never seen an albino mantis before, so I picked her up and reference-photographed her voluminously (pre-computer). Years later, I had just this one print left of the mantis, held up to a bright summer sky. I scanned in the print and was frustrated to find artifacts from the original printing in the scan. I turned it to my advantage by making the piece a silhouette, and the horizontal lines became more like a Virgil Finlay background.
