One of the biggest challenges I’ve found in watercolor is the capture of reflectivity. Many insects, due to scales or hairs, have iridescent and opalescent appearance. I’ve experimented with metallic additives to achieve effects, but the technology just isn’t there yet. This piece, however, represents just one of the shades of blue in the Morpho from South America.

Very nice! Have you tried Daniel Smith’s watercolors They have their own house brand of interference water colors that may work, among other special effect watercolors.

Thank you very kindly, Ming. I actually paint almost exclusively with Daniel Smith, finding their mineral-based pigments to have the richest color quality. I’ve tried one or two of their interference colors/additives, but even though they have the most high-tech product available, the effects still come off like a hipster heading off to a rave covered in glitter!
