Snag Spirit Mask by Pete Janes

This is a shape drawn from a snag, one of the many wind and sea-driven corpses of trees that accessorize the rocky beaches of Oregon. I am often drawn to faces hidden within naturally occurring objects. The shape at once made me think of the Green Man, madly laughing, except that this was his death mask.
My partner/muse Stacy insists that this looks like my own profile. Yet another “interesting” subconscious manifestation. I can certainly see the “madly laughing” resemblance.

Pencil, sepia and watercolor on Arches 140lb cold press.

This work was featured for the week of December 10, 2009 in the Works on Paper group!

“Pete Janes entertains the macro insect crowd with meticulous gouache and watercolor specimen pieces, while his more imaginary illustrations seem to be glimpses into faraway realities.”—noted art critic and Portland bum R. Terialspray
