Deep One pencil study by Pete Janes

Pencil on Canson sketchbook stock. A pencil study of the face of a Deep One, H.P. Lovecraft’s race of fish-people who lived on a reef off the coast of New England in the chilling story ‘The Shadow over Innsmouth’. As frightening as Lovecraft described the ocean-dwelling Deep Ones, those who lived on land in the forgotten town were worse: in a quick glance they may have passed as human, but upon closer inspection one may have noticed their large, unblinking eyes, oddly misshapen heads, or the curious, gill-like folds of flesh on their necks. I shudder even trying to illustrate them. Previous illustrative interpretations of Deep Ones have been more frog-like than fish-like, and were generally unintentionally comical. I chose a deep-sea anglerfish as a template instead to emphasize its alien-ness.

I’ve recently digitally painted this image in GIMP on a Wacom graphics tablet. You can find that image here

Nice Pete! You nailed this one!

  • Thanks Ken. Achieving the translucency when I paint it without resorting to digital magick will be the challenge.

  • Awesome! Thanks Patricia! It’s a bit odd, I took out this drawing over the weekend and started painting it.

Love this to bits. It has a lovely whispy, thin look. Delicate, mature almost understated feel. At the risk of repeating myself..I just gota say ‘I like this a lot!’
    Cheers Smurf : )
