Blatella Orientalis, The Oriental Cockroach by

Characterized by a steely blue-black exoskeleton, this roach has colonized every place on Earth where humans live, come, and go. A lot of my fascination with insects revolves around the structure and reflectivity of insect wings and exoskeletons. This illustration was originally published in BackHome Magazine, 1993. Technical pen on sketchbook stock.

“Pete Janes entertains the macro insect crowd with meticulous gouache and watercolor specimen pieces, while his more imaginary illustrations seem to be glimpses into faraway realities.”—noted art critic and Portland bum R. Terialspray

Very nicely done Pete! A lot of interesting features to this subject.

  • Thanks Ken. I suppose most folks would want to squash one if they saw one, but I’m fascinated by them!

Really love the fine detail in this, great work.

  • Thank you, Matthew. This image is small as i did a scaled-down version for publication. I also did a stippled version that was about 12″ × 16″ and monstrously detailed, but alas back in the pre-computer days I traded it for a glass sculpture. Great thing about being an artist though is you can always bust out another one!

  • Thanks Lynette! I’m no real fan of them either . . . unless they’re in my model box!
