Colored pencil, felt marker, pen and ink on bristol. One of only a few tarot cards I created from a perennially back-burner project. My heaviest influence was Aleister Crowley’s Thoth deck, painted by Lady Frieda Harris. Conceptually, the Thoth deck was far ahead of its time, including layers and layers of arabesques, geometry, and hidden images. I monkeyed with the Gamma on the scan of this piece, but I’m not sure if that counts as digital manipulation!

Organic produce slinger by day. Automatic Scribbler and Deliberate Renderer by night.

“Pete Janes entertains the macro insect crowd with meticulous gouache and watercolor specimen pieces, while his more imaginary illustrations seem to be glimpses into faraway realities.”—noted art critic and Portland bum R. Terialspray

As a whole, it is a really equilibrated design.
It does fright me. Feel the peril of the “verb”…the creator of the spiritual communication between souls and between Heaven and Earth.
Here is in fire…the mouth comes from a darkness of ignorance, but a mockery of pride, which relates it with the so famous Tower of Babel.
We see any sign of that also famous, biblic God as a penitence, as a punishment for all the manhood infirmities in the mind-heart. Sometimes I see that it is true …we are like mad…but, do not beleive in those symbols of punishment, but the symbol of our own self-punishment…..yes. All the vices of human heart are coming out of that mouth. The dove…and the serpent are almost suffocated. They are not good or evil…just the polar consecuent opposition of forces. And fire is all around…bolting the ideals and presumptions down. Fire is passion, so Heaven is like that, empty and passionate .It must be for keep on coupling with forces “in aeternum” and never repeating the creations, but transforming them. I know the Harris pack, was the first I started to study with. And now….my master is the Marseilles one..quite different. Esoterism out…and new vision, may be.
A real good work….visually and symbollicaly

  • Thank you Rosa. After I uploaded this piece, I thought that I should take a look at some of the other decks . . . and found a Tarot/bookshop just five blocks from my house! Thank you very kindly for your comment.
