Fido-Hawaiian Cane Spider by Pete Janes
Clear

Currently unavailable for purchase

Daniel Smith watercolor on Arches 140lb cold press.
This is a Hawaiian Cane Spider which came to me as a stowaway in a box of organic pineapples. She was tarantula-huge, but a relatively slow mover, so she was easy to handle and get into my “model box”. Once there, she proved adept at modeling, but it was a shot similar to this final pose that got me. Her eyes (all eight of them) were the most expressive I’ve ever seen on a spider.

Great shot, I’m not usually scared of spiders but this one has the look. Tarantula size. OMG. Congratulations on being featured. Well deserved!!

  • Thank you very kindly, Anna!

Oooh freaky…yet sooo cool! I love the colors and point of view you chose to create this work in. Great painting!

  • Thanks Carrie! When one of my subjects may or may not be venomous, I take extra precautions which often limit the best reference shots, but this one turned out well.

Brilliant detail! I love the design of insects, not usually spiders to be honest (!) but this one has real personality! Loved reading your profile, fascinating stuff, my sister lives in Beaverton. Thanks so much for favouriting my Buzzard, I’m really honoured! Take care! :0)

  • Thank you very kindly, Mags. Indeed, Fido did have a great deal of personality, so much that after I was finished gathering reference, I kept her around for a while before bringing her up to the Portland Zoo.

Spiders are not my favorite insect but this painting I adore. I like the choice of colour and this spider has almost a human quality.

  • I am glad you like it, Blended, and Fido’s “expression” was what I’d hoped to capture.
