Daniel Smith watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press.

This particular black widow came to me from a box of California escarole. Many folks say they’ve seen them around Oregon, but I have yet to come across one in the wild (although alarmingly common back in North Carolina where my folks live). It can be jarring to run across such things in your daily work, but I see them as little windows into faraway places, and fascinating subjects to paint.

“Pete Janes entertains the macro insect crowd with meticulous gouache and watercolor specimen pieces, while his more imaginary illustrations seem to be glimpses into faraway realities.”—noted art critic and Portland bum R. Terialspray

Thank you, Ken. Occasionally I like to step away from specimen-style pieces and do an action pose . . . my models, however, are unpredictable!

Congrats on your feature. So well deserved. I have to admit that I hate spiders & creepy crawly things with a passion, but this painting is too wonderful for words. It may even cause me to start liking these critters. :)

Thank you very kindly, Marsha. Often I am attempting to remove the creepy-crawly from my subjects, but it can be hard, especially with the dangerous ones!

    Hi Pete,
Another great work. I love the way you have created the white crease like lines in the background. Betty looks very realistic. We have red backs over here, which have a similar body with the vivid red stripe on their backs. Unfortunately we see them all the time in the garden. I am sure they are more frightened of us than we are of them.
    Congratulations on your feature.
