Daniel Smith watercolor on Arches 140lb cold press.
The Varied Thrush, an uncommon bird east of the Coast Range here in Oregon that visits our back 40 every winter. Birds are not my normal subject, but an odd bit of synchronicity got me drawing and painting this little guy. After the first visit, I went madly scrambling to my tattered field guide to identify the species. A few months later, staying with friends up in Long Beach, Washington I saw another out on their deck, and a month or so later I encountered a stuffed Varied Thrush in a nature exhibit in the Olympic Peninsula. The next day in Port Angeles I stopped in a bookstore and found The Sibley Guide to Birds of Western North America which featured a Varied Thrush on the cover. The following winter I was ready to paint when the little guy came back.
