Ghoul Footman
Charcoal, pastel and ink on Arches 140 lb cold press. A detail from a work in progress, actually an illustrative work related to The Ghoul Queen:

The disparate media come from experimentation, but I like the contrast of the stark outline with the busy textures. I think I’ll finish the piece in this style.

Soxy Fleming
really interesting texture you have created
Pete Janes replied
Thanks Soxy. For a long time I did everything on super-smooth hot press paper, much better for illustration and reproduction. When I finally started using some “toothier” papers I was pleased with the textures.

you may have seen that I make my own paper…lots of texture there! I actually take my lead from the textures I have in my paper, that’s where the pictures come from (that and the varied colour of the paper)
here you have made it look like stone, gives me that cave painting feeling
a link from that Ghoul Queen card would be good
LoneAngel
love the texture .. its like a cave painting .. well done
Pete Janes replied
Thank you LoneAngel. I have a book of the Chauvet Cave in France . . . some of the most incredible work, artistic techniques lost for thousands of years.

Fantastic illo & love the earthy tones here Pete :)
I alos usually use Arches ‘Cold’ for watercolour work, and although some like Stonehenge and various Fabriano’s are great, this one ‘tooth’ takes the biscuit ;)
Cheers!

that’s very cool!
