Leicester Cathedral was called RATAE by the Romans who built a city which lies underneath modern Leicester. Below the Cathedral are the remains of a Roman temple. 900 years ago the Normans began to build the present church.
The Cathedral is dedicated to St Martin who was a Roman soldier. He was riding his horse one winter’s day when he saw a poor, cold beggar. Martin cut his soldier’s cloak in two and gave one part to the beggar. That night Martin had a vision of Christ and left the army to become a monk. Later he was chosen by the people of Tours in France to be their Bishop.
During Saxon times in 680 AD Leicester had its first Bishop, Cuthwine. Two hundred years later the last Saxon Bishop fled South from the invading Danes. For a very long time there was no Bishop and Leicestershire was taken care of by the Bishops of Lincoln and later by the Bishops of Peterborough. In 1927 the church of St Martin was hallowed as the Cathedral church. (Info Source: Cathedrals Plus)
