Just a Curiosity
Your views please.
Was just sitting here thining….I know I know…a dangerous thing! Anyway was wondering about Photo titles. Do you think it makes a difference to how people view a photo based on the title or description you give?
Does someone view a picture differently if the title is catchy v/s an untitled work?
I would be interested to hear your views.

Thats funny because I think about that too. I take a picture and my wife and I sit there and try to figure out what to name it…. Sometimes we come up blank so you get a barn photo with the title of Barn LOL. We try to find titles for the photo’s but usually don’t write up a description for it. I want people to see what they see in a photo. I don’t want to make them see what I saw in it… When viewing another photographer’s work, the work catches my eye first and then I may read the title and description. Thanks for posting your journal… Mike

Often the title gives that extra idea of what the artist had in mind and lets you look at a work in a different way than you might otherwise have seen it yourself. That gives it more depth I feel…. your take on it and the artists take on it. Anyway that’s just my thinking and what do i know!! Lol

Personally, I think it is a mixture of both. Again very dependent on the subject, an object can be capture and the photo is a verbatim representation of what it is therefore the title is self explanatory. In other cases the title and the photo are almost like a package, they both add to the overall experience to the end viewer. The title can set the mood be it romantic, sad or humorous…..
Excellent question Robin!

Sometimes for me its a phrase or title that cause me to create the work and sometimes when I am finished creating the title pops into my head. Is the title important I think it can add to any photo or image for sure.

a titled picture you no what you are looking at , on the other hand when you see an untitled picture it gets your curiosity going so you have to look , but i do view all pictures the same way title or no title it is the work.

I think the title gives you insight into what the artist saw when they took the shot. It definitely influences me. I usually I look at the photo first before I read the title. Sometimes I laugh because I what I saw and what the artist saw can be so different. I think a title can also “make” a photo. Consider the difference between “Sailboat” and “Sailing into the Sunset”. The second example gives the picture much more character and really, a story.

I don’t think the title matters that much for a regular photo. For a card, it may make a difference. I mean the first thing that catches my eye if the image, not the title. On the other hand, the title does give some meaning to the shot in terms of what the artist was trying to project. I comment based on the image. I include my pet’s names in my titles, just because that’s what I’ve been doing. So, you all get to know Buster and Katy, for example.

I think it gives an insight into the photographer’s mind and what they saw and were trying to convey at the time of the shot … I think a title is quite important!

a lot of times, ill have a title for a shot, and have to wait to find the shot…lol
other times, as im hitting that shutterbutton..the title comes to mind
some say..its best to have what the shot is about for the title…however..if we all put…sunset over river…ya know how many shots that would turn out?
so..yea…a title is very important in my opinion
like this shot…it’s titled…... from one ass to another…......now..think if i had titled it…..two donkeys
