Are you a virgin?

Strange question you may think, however no stranger than when the words are uttered by your 6 year old son…

This story makes me smile every time I tell it and one that usually has the listener tucked up with laughter for sometime afterwards.

Let me explain…

A few years ago, shortly before Christmas, my wife had gone out to get the last few presents for friends and family leaving my son, then aged 6 to amuse ourselves while she was away.

My son wanted to do some colouring so I set him up with book and crayons and then settled down on the sofa to catch up on the afternoon’s football matches on Sky Sports News.

Before long my son looked up from his colouring, tilted his head on one side and asked one of THOSE questions. It was one of those moments you cringe at as a parent, as you don’t want to not give an answer nor do you want to lie to your child, however, it is one of the most awkward situations to get out of.

He looked up, gazed me in the eye and asked, ‘Dad, are you a virgin?’

Well, what do you say?
I was truly floored.
I wondered how long it would be before my wife got back, maybe she could explain?
Surely he was too young to understand such a term?
How was I going to explain this to a 6 year old?

I tried to work out a suitable reply, I stuttered, mumbled, and thought some more, where the hell was the wife when you needed her, I was stumped.

Then, as almost as surprising as the original question, my saving grace arrived from the most unlikely of sources.

Having deliberated on a response for what seemed like minutes, but was in reality surely only a few seconds, my panic was whisked away by the very person that caused it in the first place.

My son, still staring into my eyes, calmly and quietly said, ‘because, I’m a Capricorn aren’t I?’, nodded, with a see I know my star signs, confidence and quietly returned to his colouring.

‘Yes, you are!’, I replied, ‘and I’m an Aries’, whilst chuckling to myself and enjoying the warm feeling of relief of having had that careful pause to consider my answer, otherwise the conversation could have turned out to be very, very difficult.

The innocence of youth!

Hope this made you chuckle.
