I used several layers of the original photo, applied curves and other histogram adjustments, and also forced the layerings to keep some subtle color, compared to an all black and white. I really should start recording (scripting) my effects, but when you are involved in them you aren’t always sure they will come out the way you want them too and you tend to forget to record :)
