I have never felt my attention so unwelcome as here!I would never have taken a photograph if it hadn’t been for their unexpected reaction. I pressed the shutter and retired.London 1970.Leica M3, 35mm film.

you catch some great expressions
Thank you for both of your comments, Judy.
David – this is a powerful photo in respect to the ‘intrusion’ of the camera and how the photographer sees their role. From your comment the moment in time had a profound effect on you. Your photography is such a comment on the time and now there is a comment on you – I am a sociologist, sorry about that, using photography as the medium for my research work and currently reading a number of texts such as Sontag, Barthes and Bourdieu – so my interest in your comments comes from my work and current reading. Sorry about the long lecture but the more i work with photography the more i am fascinated by it as a medium
Fascinating! Perhaps I shouldn’t have taken the picture, and yet I wouldn’t have taken it if it hadn’t been for their expressions. Many interesting photographs would never have seen the light of day if the photographer had not ‘intruded’ on the scene.Thank you for your stimulating comment.
this is a very powerful image and you are right their expressions are very important to the image – it has powerful meaning even today and feels very contemporary in many ways – great piece of photojournalism.
Intrusion…..or could it have been ‘dismay’?S
A mixture of both, I suspect. Thanks, Sophie.
Not a lot has changed, I found myself there a couple of weeks ago. Got a bit of grief, but managed to get this.
Thank, John, for letting me see this great portrait.
it’s amazing to me that the area of Speakers corner dedicated to free speech can be so intimidating when certain groups exercise their right to speak and we try to exercise our right to listen and photograph.
I remember an occasion at Speakers’ Corner when I was approached by an Arab gentleman who asked me very politely if I would avoid including himself or any of his party in my shots. he didn’t give an explanation but I suspected he might have been embarrassed if a shot had been published showing him present at the home of free speech.
or might have been worried about outstanding criminal warrants.
