“I would like to nominate David Malcolmson’s photo London Tourists
This is an extraordinary image in its own right, and has a justified place in the history of that great art form – street photography. On the one hand, it seems hard to believe that the image is approximately 41 years old, but on the other hand it is hard to escape the conclusion that it is very much a product of its time. It seems to me that works like this just aren’t being casually made anymore, so we should celebrate fine examples like this one and use them as inspiration so that we can re-ignite the flame that once powered our candid street photographers.”
**

Possibly the strangest photograph I have ever taken. It was late afteroon and I was approaching the entrance to Piccadilly Station when I saw these people gazing at the local sights. I was extremely lucky to have just one frame of film left. The light was getting dim so I shot at full aperture and prayed everything would turn out all right.. Thankfully it did! London, 1967.

  • TonySlattery

    TonySlattery

Street photography at it’s best. The wonderful thing about B&W film, it almost always comes out, at least an image that you can work on.

Part of a really interesting series of photographs of people from another era. Such a pity that all those other images were lost in a fire.

  • david malcolmson replied

Thanks, Tony, for all your kind words about my images. As for black an white I agree with you entirely, and thanks to Photoshop and the like, it is possible to rescue an image that would have otherwise been unprintable.

  • shallay

    shallay

This IS amazing. They look awestruck – think exposure through television & print media would have destroyed this emotion by now. I was 12 in 1969 and it is interesting to travel back in time and be reminded of how it all looked.

  • shallay

    shallay

And of course, 10 in 1967 – correction.

  • david malcolmson replied

Thank you, shallay. I think you are right when you write that people in our culture are losing their sense of wonder, and television and the press have caused people to become cynical and blase.

Timeless….. what all great photographs are made of….. and brings back some mmeories of for what for me are memorable times in my own childhood.

Fabulous frame…. Is this a recent print from the original neg with modern darkroom pp I as myself…. If not this photo has sttod the test of time remarkably well thus far.

Congrats of the Front Page feature – rightly so….

  • david malcolmson replied

Thank you, zooreka. The original negative is still in great condition. However this image is from a high resolution scan of the negative. At my current exhibition at Newcastle upon Tyne, all the images on the wall are inkjet prints and so many peoplehave commented on how technically fine the images were.I used the high quality Harman range of papers as well a a special grey cartridge on my printer.

When I first looked at the photo, I thought they were not real, like wax figures placed on the sidewalk. Then the more I looked, the more it became real, and then I noticed they are all looking at something different! This is an amazing photo!!!
I like the way you blurred the background out, it makes them look like the were plopped there in place.
    Fantastic!!

  • zooreka

    zooreka

David,,, Thanks for the reply…. Much as I had suspected re the processing but very surprising that you mention inkjet…. I know how amazing some of the top end printers are now but I suspected this might have been a process printer…..

The trouble I find with inkjets is permanence but as you mention if you have a HD Scan of the neg all the better – or Bob’s your Uncle!

I bought an Epson scanner a couple of years back which had an add on film scanner…. Great investment it was too… Only problem is there have been some 5000 miles between it and I for the past 5 years….. hopefully ;economy permiting’ we will be reuntited this coming year.

Best of Luck with the Exhibition and once again thanks for sharing a timeless piece with us.

It just never looses its innocent charm this shot no matter how many times I come across it on ‘the bubble’ – it pushes me to wonder whether it were indeed possible to still find such unabashed innocence in the heart of London as this?

  • david malcolmson replied

Even when I took this shot way back in the 1960s I was surprised to encounter that kind of innocence in what was becoming an increasingly cynical age. Many thanks, follicle, for your kind words about the image.

  • david malcolmson replied

Please excuse the late reply, photomatte. I am very grateful for your comments about this image. I used my Epson Perfection 1650 to scan the original 120 negative (using the scanner’s transparency hood).

Oh, and thank you for the info about what you used to scan the image; I have so many prints/negatives I would love to have as digital files…but it takes so long.

  • photomatte

    photomatte

Hey, I just looked at it again and it seems you must’ve re-scanned it? I don’t remember being able to see their hands before. Very nice!

  • david malcolmson replied

Many thanks for your reply, photomatte. I can assure you I haven’t done anything to the image since you first viewed it! ...Some modern scanners allow you to scan an entire film at one go – that should speed up the process.

  • Damien Woods

    Damien Woods

Your collection of film street photography is extraordinary. A true artform. High-end digital is an expensive alternative and quality could be as a good as film, not really sure. But film certainly has it’s uniqueness in that it requires more skill perhaps, especially in processing.
