the painting that does not want to get finished
...just thought I’d show this to somebody, before I take it apart. It has been balancing on a power point bw the wall and a cupboard for the past 3-4 years.
I started this about 6 years ago and never touched it again. It was from a photo I found on the internet and really loved. I decided to paint on white for some reason – I always use mid-tone background colour…This is only the middle portion of it. The size of the whole canvas is 1.2m x 1.4m (acrylic)

This is beautiful Sorina-so why don’t you just add a little soft background color.
Sorina Williams
This is only about a 3rd of the whole canvas (if not less) – doing a background for something so big and unfinished feels useless…

doesn’t matter if it gets ruined, it’s the journey of discovery, there is no wrong or right with some art works. I’ve totally ruined works thinking I can make them better, hmm sometimes it becomes a great painting, or a dud, all experience.
JohnThunderbird
you can always “crop” the section you like and re stretch it.
Sorina Williams replied
good points!....Thanks

I was just going to say what John said, add some background colour and take it to the framers to restretch it to the new size! Who cares about the wasted canvas you didn’t cover… the reason you probably didn’t go further is because it is beautiful as it is and there’s something in your head that knows this and wants you to stop. It’s beautiful!
Cilliers
Infact… sorry, I have more to say… if you just finish the woman facing us and keep everything else toned down and muted into a background colour she will become the gorgeous focal point of it all. I can’t wait to see what you do decide to do to this Sorina : )
Sorina Williams replied
Thanks Carmen!!! The reason I want to take it apart is to reuse the frame which is nice hardwood. I am not sure why I didn’t go back to it – probably so much white canvas…strange choice at the time. You, John and Karin are probably right about cropping and re-stretching. Didn’t think of that! I’ll check how much that would cost… thanks again!!!
Karin Taylor
yep, the detail is precious….dont destroy it…
definitely have this restretch as Carmen suggests….brill idea
it’s just right, and you must have that feeling too….as loading the picture
suggests that you feel proud of it ….Sorina, it’s seriously beautiful…please believe us
Sorina Williams replied
Hi Karin! You are right, I do like the few painted bits and that’s why I uploaded something so unfinished… as I just told Carmen, I didn’t think of cropping and re-stretching. Thanks!!
HeatherBrown
I like this very much… I especially like the movement in the figures. Well worth completing.

Sorina this is a wonderful painting and I really feel that it is perfect! The colours and the details within this superb painting need no more. Six years is a long time and you won’t be able to recapture your feelings from so long ago. Whatever you felt and try to convey is within this work. John, is right you can cut the canvas and
restretch it! If I was technical I would copy and paste this painting within a virtual living room to prove how wonderful it is!!!! Please think a little more! I hope you are well my Dear Sorina? Thinking of you!Sx
P.S. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!!!!x
Helene Kippert
I agree with everyone else sorina – this is great cropped and needs little more work to make it a really stunning painting. Definitely worth doing something with it!
Helene Kippert
Oh and if you’re afraid of wrecking it you could always try working with it digitally first! Just a thought :o)

amazing beautiful work!!!!!!
madvlad
yes, some times we get stuck amen on that,,just remember its only paint, and if youput some paint on it you don,t like- hell, paint over it, i do often, the problem is always. you, being afraid of messing up some that that never was, before, you started ,so proceed and then,if it not just right, you can change it, some times? we worry too much, it is nice so far though!
mimi yoon
this is perfect this way… it’s beautiful and i love it !!!

I did not even notice that it wasn’t finished. Have you thought about filling the canvas with related imagery- whether in colour or subject matter. look up babasteve on flickr for more images of African people. If you ask, he’ll most likely let you use his images as a source.
Sorina Williams replied
Thank you!! Just spent about an hour going through babasteve’s photos. They are amazing!!! At the moment the plan is to restretch the cropped canvas (the section that you see here), but I like your idea. :) Thanks again.

I think this is beautiful Sorina. You received wonderful ideas from everyone, but in the end you yourself have to decide where you want to go with it.
Mariska
Brilliant job , love as it is…
Sorina Williams replied
Thanks Mariska!

this is beautiful the way it is. :))))))))))
Cheryle
This actually feels finished-who said the whole canvas needs to be painted? Nice work,
Cheryle
Sorina Williams replied
Thanks Cheryle! Very true, it doesn’t have to be painted all over! Still have not really decided which way to go, except that I want to crop it to what you see here.
