To Lay In Daffodils

I am a skinny boy
In layers of clothing
Each piece doing nothing to keep out the cold.

There is a switch that occurs.
It is directly tied to lovers walking hand in hand
And winters that turn slowly into spring.

While I am still trying to catch snowflakes with my tongue
You admire the daffodils that bloom in bright sheets
Across fields that are separated by roads of pavement.

They lead you in one direction
And lead me in another,
Until you are too far away.
Leaving me trapped in the season that was
And you trapped in the season to be.

Now, no matter how many sweaters I crawl inside
There is still a draft that comes through my window at night
It seeps through the stitches and soaks into my skin.

I am a skinny boy
Waiting for spring
Hoping that it is not too late
To lay in daffodils.
