Angry Sky
This was my first attempt at lightening. I quickly learned that this is an artform all on its own. I thought I had about 50 great shots. When I got home and checked everything out – I had just TWO shots that showed any lightening – this is one of them! I have a question: Why do my lightening shots appear grainy. I need help in knowing what settings I should use for this specialty.
Angry Sky belongs to the following groups:
Lightning and Storms Available for sale asGreeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints, Framed Prints and Posters

Hi Paul, very nice first capture. Keep shooting :)

This is fantastic Paul.
Mate I have written a Quick tutorial on lightning photography and it is located in the Lightning and Storms group.
But you can find it here
You shots most likely appear grainey because of high ISO settings, Make sure its on the lowest setting your Camera has.
Cheers

Fantastic shot Paul!! If you want help with these kinds of shots, ask CameraView or Jeremy Jones (father and son) who actually chases these things around to get shots. They also do photography for a pyrothechnics firm. And the really cool thing is these guys are really good to help out with info! I know Jeremy’s pretty busy these days but CameraView (Dennis) is likely on line right as we speak.

wow, this is really great!!! the clouds are perfectly black and murky. for the noise level, just make sure the ISO setting is on one of the lower settings. i don’t know much about night time photography so it might be more than that. :) great image though!

This is a very nice photo!! I love how the lightening looks like it is going through the clouds.. If you get any good advice about shooting skies and clouds, do share with the rest of us! ;-) Congrats on getting the “front page.”

wow this is so cool, and so rare!

for a first this is amazing. I found out that grainy pictures are either due to three things at my convention this weekend. Unclean sensors or damaged sensors, High ISO, or incorrect setting of White Balance. The later two are the most prevalent.
