Yūga (Elegance)

Contemporary sumi-e style orchid painting in fall colors (blue, green, dark brown and shades of orange). The calligraphy is yūga (sometimes written as yuuga), which means elegance in Japanese.

The original painting was made with artist-grade acrylics on canvas by the Canadian contemporary artist, Soniei.

Wonderful. I enjoyed watching the video too. How do you get the marbled look of each colourded square? amd did you leave the tape on and paint it black? It went too fast in the movie!

I love all of your work. Keep creating such wonderful pieces. Cheers.

Thank you so much for the compliments! =D

For the marbled look of the colored squares, I just paint a medium coat of heavy body acyrlics (liquitex), let it dry for about 5 minutes, and then I used a spray bottle and spray the square unevenly with water… where the water lands, is where the lighter color will be. Then I take a paper towel and lightly dab it over the square to take the water/excess water paint off. I let this layer dry for about 20-30 minutes, and then I paint a thin coat of either brown (I like to water down liquitex heavy body transparent raw umber) or the same color as the first layer… this is just to make the color richer.

I took the tape off before painting the canvas black. I use tape just to guide me in where the square and lines will be.
