Thoughts in the Night

Acryllic on canvas

I woke a few nights ago in the early hours and just lay there looking at my husband of 32 years and feeling so grateful for him and for the fact that after a two year battle with cancer, we have a good prognosis. I did the painting and poem over the next few days:

Thoughts in the Night

I lay awake last night,
Watching you as you slept.
Inhaling your sweet essence
That never weakens to me.
How have I been so lucky to
Have married you and to stay
Married to you for over 30 years?

I love your profile. Just as wonderful as when you were a young man.
Now you have lines of the life
You have lived
Etched on your face.
Your kindness and serenity
Appear even in sleep.
Your stability has saved me
Over and over, so many times.
I love lying by you.
I love touching you and
Feeling your reality so firm
And so good even through the
Suffering you have been through.

I love you so much.
I never expected the love and lust
I felt for you in the beginning to
Grow into such a solid
Inexhaustible bond.

I watch you with our children
Adult now and leading their own lives
And yet just as eager for your advice and approval as they always have been.

My heart aches with the
sweetness of you.
I cannot imagine walking without
you beside me.
I put my arm across your shoulder
And smile.
You fart and snore like anything
And this is familiar and dear to me too.
You blow your nose and all conversation has to stop until
You have finished.

On our honeymoon
I remember waking one morning
And you were blowing your nose.
It struck me I would hear this everyday
For the rest of my life.
And so far this is true.

How could I begin to describe
To you all that you mean to me?
I was so rude and bossy when we
Married and I don’t know
How you put up with me.
But I am so grateful you have.
I have never met a humanbeing
So kind and so caring.
So humble and so gifted.

You are my shining star,
My rock, my greatest love.
I will be yours forever.

That is one of the most beautiful things I’ve read in a long, long time. How very amazing and wonderful that you feel so much love and have for so long, despite the “farts”. They say that keeping a marriage together is very hard work but it is obvious that a deep love is the foundation that never wavers. God bless you and your hubby…and I hope his illness will subside long enough for you to live many more years together…..oh, and the painting si so very sweet…so natural…love it too!

Thank you Barb, your comments always mean a lot. It is amazing to love someone so long and so much. He’s an amazing man. He’s a chemistry teacher, an Anglican priest and a plumber/decorator. He also ran a bakery once during our life in Scotland. And he is more loving and kind than I could ever describe…Thank you for sharing the poem and painting with me. :0) Song
