Secret Window

Secret Window by Dave Hampton – Nenana, Alaska

The secret window was taken on a reindeer farm I worked on about five miles outside of Nenana. In the bottom of this photograph you can see the massive pen were we kept about a hundred and twenty head. You have to be Native Alaskan to run a reindeer farm. My boss was Athabascan from northern Alaska. The stories He would tell around the fireplace were incredible. Tales of wildlife, small village living, and mushing dogs filled my imagination. That is were I discovered my passion for dog sledding. I sure do miss those nights and my secret window.

BEAUTIFUL!! I didn’t know that there was a reindeer farm in the Nenana area. We’ve been to the one In Palmer, the difference there is that the owner is not Native Alaskan….and the way he got around that law is that the reindeer that are on his farm are all Canadian reindeer. Two years ago for the Anchorage Winter Carnival aka Fur Rondy, it was decided to try and do an event called ‘The Running With The Reindeer’ people pay to run down a section of 5th Ave with about a half dozen reindeer, it was such a big hit and fund raiser that it was once again a part of Fur Rondy this past winter, the reindeer used in this event came from the Palmer farm. Take Care ~ Deb ~ :)

Yeah it is called woodland farms. It is five miles north of Nenana. You can see it from the Alaska Railroad. I was at the running with the reindeer, What a blast. I can’t wait to see it again. I train dogs for the Osmars and Sebastian Schnuelle so I am always at the Iditarod Start as well as the Rondy. Thanks for the comments. Maybe I will see you there.

STunning shot….how envious I am for your experiences in Alaska. I’ve only been there once and fell madly in love. But unfortunately, the family is in Michigan instead….so that is where I am. But I am living vicariously through your photos in the beauty of Alaska! Thank you for sharing this beautiful area!
