Yak Mountain

Yak Mountain

I got an early start in the dark up the steep trail which was iced over higher up due to the subzero temperature. Some sections of the trail was also snow covered. Hiking poles really help maintain balance. One of my favorite areas is off trail to the base of Needle Peak; a rugged area of fractured rock and delicate moss. One of the few times to catch the soft light on Yak Peak, across the way, is during fall when the sun’s angle sidelights the face of the granite rock.
I heard ptarmigans vocalizing somewhere amongst the granite rocks and saw frozen bear prints in the snow; large and small probably a sow with a cub. I followed the prints up on a ridge and saw bear droppings punctuated with dozens of undigested berries. Without snow, I would have never known that an animal had passed this way.
