Kruzenshtern Tall Ship, Halifax, Nova Scotia 2009
The Halifax, Nova Scotia, Tall Ship Festival July 2009 was a spectacular event to attend. We had mixed weather, but ended up with two beautiful days for taking photos of the Tall Ships in Halifax Harbour.
The four-masted bark, built in 1926 as the “Padua”, is the last vessel of its kind. Built as a cargo-carrying sailing ship, she was one of the Flying P-Liners, the sailing ships of the German F. Laeisz shipping company from Hamburg. The last Windjammer is still active today, although it has undergone a change in profession and turned training ship. Today the “Kruzenshtern” is the world’s second largest sailing ship – second only to another Russian ship, “Sedov” – and, without a doubt, the most famous ship in the contemporary Russian sailing fleet. wow great shot Anne xxx

Thank you, Bev! Wish this ship had its sails up when it was going through the parade of sails. Kruzenshtern is from Russia and it was the largest ship there. It would have been spectactular in full sail. xxx

Great shot of this fantastic ship. We had them in Bermuda for a few days after they left Tenerife on their way to the US (North Carolina, I believe) and it was fascinating to watch them sail out along our North Shore in full sail.

Thank you, triciamary. We saw a few in full sail and some with the sails down. I still have to post a few up on RB, but need to get some time to work on them. :)

Gorgeous. I was a crew member on Europa and we sailed with the Kruzhenstern several times, sometimes for a few days at a time moving from one port to another. She is positively sublime with all her canvas set. If you want to see I have a pic of her sailing in company with Romania’s Mircea, taken from the Europa’s deck. She is a bit farther off but you can see what a giant she is even from a distance.

Hi Matt, my apologies for a late reply. It seems I missed your comment. I did see your photo, and she a beauty in full sail. You are very fortunate to be able to sail on these ships. It’s an experience of a lifetime.
