SHE

I saw her face today.
I looked deep into her eyes.
The distance they purveyed.
Her age they did belie.

And it’s no surprise.
For I’ve seen her face before.
In a different kind of guise.
But the same kind of uniform.

She comes in through the door.
She takes the things she needs.
She never asks for more.
And then she does proceed.

She’ll do all that I want.
To keep me safe at night.
The images must haunt.
The sacrifice for right.

I could love her with my life.
Though I do not know her name.
I could take her for my wife.
If not for this foolish game.

For her love is oh so deep.
For nothing does it ask.
Her love will surely keep
me safe from Evil’s grasp.

She doesn’t notice me.
I’m not surprised, I’m not perturbed.
More important things she sees.
Her thoughts I won’t disturb.

I can love her from afar.
I can give my heart and soul.
For she isn’t just a girl.
She is a soldier I’ll never know.
