I don’t consider myself to be a strident environmentalist. I like meat, I have no problem wearing leather either, better to use the whole animal. I do want the meat I eat to be raised and dispatched as humanely as possible, but I won’t feel shame for killing another animal for my sustenance, especially if those animals are nowhere near the point of being in short supply.
What concerns me more are the people who refuse to see that by not being willing to change even a small portion of their behaviour, they’re impacting everything else around them. Yes, you may have to diminish your lifestyle now, but so what? Soccer Mommies do not need Hummers. With the invention of modern fabrics and waterproofing – we don’t need to wear fur, there’s something warmer. Why the hell does anyone need their AC cranked to the max on a balmy day. What happened in the Gulf is catastrophic – but anyone who uses their car to travel to a store that’s a half-hour walk away can share in some of that responsibility. Greedy companies would not be raping the planet if we were not complicit in supplying the demand for products we could do without.
CITES ( Convetion In Trade of Endangered Species) recently turned down a proposal to make the sale of Polar Bear and Atlantic Bluefin Tuna products restricted – personally, I’m not too concerned if some Inuit tribal leaders up North will no longer be able to sell polar-bear hunting tours to rich gun-toting bloodthirsty wingnuts as part of their "way of life", when they could probably make more money by selling tours to see these animals before they become extinct. Yes, bluefin tuna is a delicacy, and not being able to eat it for a while could possibly be considered a harship ( my heart bleeds) – but compare that to never being able to eat it again once the fate of the Tuna goes the same way as the Atlantic Cod.
I suppose there’s always shark fins to eat though isn’t there? May as well be eating parts of your own ear – it’s the same thing, cartilage. The most aggravatingly ironic thing about finning – 100% of the animal is left to die for less than 2% of it’s body mass. Body mass that is regarded as a ‘delicacy’ but which HAS NO FLAVOUR!!!!! Why are people going nuts to eat something that tastes of nothing? Why, to show how important they are.. and what big willies they have. That’s why stupid ridiculous things like Seahorse, Tiger Penis, Bear Bile amongst others are eaten in most of Asia… to ‘increase potency’. It’s time to turn to fucking Viagra like everyone else and leave the animals alone. I’m sure there’s plenty of health benefits to be found in Chinese Traditional Medicine – but as far as I’m concerned, man has made great enough strides in the field of medicine to no longer find it necessary to dose ourselves with animals on the verge of extinction.
Sorry for the long-winded ranting people, but this is a subject that is becoming more and more important to me the more I see how little people give a crap for the world they inhabit. The mantra seems to be ‘Why should I care about the future when I’m going to be dead anyway" – to people like that, all I can say is… sooner rather than later if I could do anything about it.
PS – the last remaining female African Rhino was left to bleed to death in the Kruger National Park after poachers sawed off her horn…. and all so some thoughtless, mindless, selfish idiot in Beijing could get his cock up.
