You often hear of people complaining about squirrels emptying their birdfeeders. Well, on 8.21.10, I was finally able to capture these two giant but cute ‘squirrels’ pilfering safflower hearts out of our cardinal feeder in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. This summer, we’ve seen these enormous ‘squirrels’ not only emptying this birdfeeder but literally climbing an oak tree for acorns and jumping from the ground onto hanging birdfeeders. They seem to enjoy patrolling the gardens and chasing birds, normal-sized squirrels as well as the local feral cat population or anything else that may threaten their food supply. Additionally, they have also been known to enjoy taking a bite or two out of the juiciest, ripest, ready-to-be-harvested tomatoes from our vegetable garden. If you look very close, you can even see a male cardinal who is hoping and praying that giant ‘squirrels’ know how to share.
