7/28/10 ~ Featured in Squirrels & Chipmunks
It looks like my whole woodpile to me! On 7/27/07, this ‘whistle pig’ was running in and out from underneath my woodpile (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) as he feasted on the nearby safflower seed.
The groundhog, also known as a woodchuck , whistle pig or land-beaver, is found widely through North America and is a rodent belonging to the group of large ground squirrels. Their diet consists mainly of wild grasses, other vegetation, and berries. When outside their burrow, it is common to see one or more standing erect on their hind feet watching for danger. When they sense danger, they use a high-pitched whistle to warn the rest of the colony – this is how they have acquired the nickname “whistle-pig”.
