join me on my journey to work ...

i turn the key and the engine roars into life like a lion awaking from his slumber
i adjust my body to fit the seat and fix my mind into autopilot
the cd player is activated and Paolo Nutini sings ‘autum leaves’ in his best voice
ah ready to move down the drive and onto that winding road that i know so well
a glance to either side of this tree lined corridor and pedal to the floor
a swift left turn and along the short stretch that becomes a steep inclined plane
up the hill and past my childhood playground and i see the fishermen preparing their fly fishing rods for a leisurely day on the water as they scan the dam for trout
ah the music continues to sound and i break into song, my favourite part, my mind reflects to a memory of grandparents provoked by the song
im watching the road ahead but am seeing friendly familiar faces
isn’ t it amazing how the mind in tandem with my bodily motions continue, instinctively, to drive this vehicle over this familiar track
as i continue i sense the forty shades of green that surround me complete with the beasts that reside there in their black and white leather jackets
past the forest and the old country church yard gate
the skyline glows with the emerging sun half a world away
the birds begin to lift from their resting places and form in little organised swarms in the sky
another left turn and down an ajoining road, a treacherous and deadly road
my memory flashes back to an earlier horrific scene, i shake myself and focus on the sweet music that fills me full of joy
doesn’t last for long, fifty meters perhaps before i shift to the day ahead
yea … work and the kids that await me with their questions and thirst for learning
not too far now approximately eight minutes from my place of work
will i be on time … i glance at the digital clock above my head and subconsiously calculate the ETA … ah … i will get there with minutes to spare and maybe some time to grab a coffee in the office before the daily briefing
on down the road and i watch a tractor cross the field to my right with a tired looking driver … the rat race is not a part of his dream … thoughts of a well groomed landscape and a plentiful harvest will be the concern of this farmer
this entire journey, it has suddenly occured to me, has been in solitude as i have not passed any other road user
another left turn and three miles to go
a fast stretch of road so i place the pedal down to floor level … acceleration beyond the road limit … no one will know … the needle reaches 90 mph and im feeling as free as a bird
the song changes to a faster beat and my heart races to that same rhythm
both hands firmly gripping the steering wheel before racing over the brow in the road
safe over the top and quick on brakes before arriving at the next junction
yet another left turn and i smile … a sheep is standing by the roadside bewildered almost as though hes escaped the confines of the field beyond but doesn’t know what to do next
a weird thought occurs to me … what if i die and arrive back on earth reincarnated as bloody stupid sheep … now my smile becomes a chuckle
the sky is brighter now and i can see the sun peeking over the hill in front of me … a beautiful colour illuminates the view
i wish i had time to stop and capture this moment with my camera
damn, missed a great capture there … that may have been interesting … ah well
traffic appears in front of me as i continue along this road and i think to myself that im not the only earlybird making their way to work
more movement up ahead as i reach the main line … i find myself now estimating and judging speed and distance … im off … accross the crossroads and into a residential area
be careful Dave … some kids about, slowly does it and i get a wave from a cheeky little customer … i return a smile and a nod as i navigate a small roundabout tied to a pedestrian crossing
its a straight road now and im feeling ready for the day ahead … a little peckish as i didn’t take breakfast … maybe a biscuit with that coffee i think … yip i will do that
swift right turn and im there … school … i pull up into my own little space, engine off and seatbelt released … pop in some gum and switch to teacher mode …

join me on my journey to work ...
