Carrickfergus Methodist Church (before demolition Dec '08)
I will always remember this building fondly … as I walked past its doors on many many occasions from a boy … sadly its now gone … demolished due to the timbers having dry rot … what a shame! ... surely it could have been saved … another piece of our heritage gone forever.
Ah well at least I have this and other snaps to remember it.
Saint Nicholas’s Church spire can be seen on the right hand side of this photo … that is my own church ... Curch of Ireland! ... one of the oldest churches in Co.Antrim.

A wonderful capture, David, and the treatment really suits. A fine old building. They’re not great on civic conservation here, are they. There’s one just beside the Walls here that is dilapidated and really neglected. Sad to see. Agnes xx

is so sad … local government are too carried away with other short lived money squandering schemes … a real shame indeed !

I totally agree, Dave. It makes me angry when I think of it. Agnes xx

Beautiful image Dave and such a sad story. Once these old historic buildings are gone then part of our history is also gone. I’d love you to put this in the Historic Churches group.

Just thought I’d make a comment as it’s my church. You’re right, it was a shame that it had to be demolished, and perhaps if there had been a huge amount of money to spare it could have been restored, but life isn’t like that, and it was interesting on the morning of the demolition how easily the walls crumbled. You can see a little of the external damage to the walls in the photograph. I think we were fortunate to take the action that we did, when we did. We felt, as a church, that it was time to move on, and there were no dissenters (that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t some sadness), and now we look forward to the future with hope, as we anticipate a new building in a complementary style to be finished on the site in July 2010 (the steelwork is going up at the moment). Thanks for recording an image of the building as it was, albeit looking a little the worse for wear – I hope you continue to enjoy success with your pictures. (BTW, there is another earlier B&W photo of the building around somewhere, but I couldn’t find the link to advise you of it – I’ll keep looking)
