When this tree

When this tree

When this tree,
this one gnarled, twisted old tree,
is seen for what it is,
then all there will be
is tree.

And when this touch,
this together-twining of fingers,
is closed and complete,
then all time past present and future
will lie pooled in our palms
like holy quicksilver.

And when this kiss,
this slow movement of mouths
each toward each, is joined,
then all our lives that were
and all our lives that will be
will join in it, tender and bruised.

And when this life,
this one gnarled, twisted, tangled life,
is seen for what it was,
when illusion has dropped away
and only the clear light remains,
then all there will be
is tree.
