Marion Barry

From Wikipedia: “Marion Shepilov Barry, Jr. (born March 6, 1936), is an American politician who served as the second elected mayor of the District of Columbia from 1979 to 1991, and again as the fourth mayor from 1995 to 1999. He was the target of a high-profile 1990 arrest on drug charges, which precluded him from seeking reelection that year. After he was convicted of the charges, Barry served six months in prison, but was elected to the D.C. city council in 1992 and ultimately returned to the mayoralty in 1994, serving from 1995 to 1999. Today, Barry again serves on the city council, representing Ward 8, which comprises Anacostia, Congress Heights, Washington Highlands and other neighborhoods.”

Anytime D.C. is brought up in conversation, no matter where or when that conversation takes place, 9 times out of 10 Marion Barry’s name will come up. He’s like our poster boy, for better or worse.
If and when I ever get a chance to do a mural on the side of some building in D.C., Mayor Barry will be my first and only choice of subject matter.
This is my first attempt at oil portraiture. I didn’t expect it to turn out so well as it did.
