I took this photo a while back now, at Taronga Zoo. Simple shot of a penguin (Rockhopper, I think) preening. Somehow, in black and white, I felt the sense of how this action has been performed for millions of years. It is a simple and immediate action, everyday but also ancient.
I thought about how they have done this across the windswept, snowswept, rainswept ages, how they have lived their lives with the salt and the waves for countless millenia, how this is both ancient of days and right here, right now.
