Wanna hitch a ride to the galaxy? by

The hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy featured a character named Ford Prefect. It just happened that I am a big fan of the book and I happened to find in Canada a Ford Prefect (1938-1949), in a rusty junkyard kind of condition, but nonetheless a magnificent car. I have been tinkering with this picture for over 2 years. The original picture featured an ugly building in the background. Unfortunately it was also a building with similar colours of the car, making it very difficult to mask. I finally find a way to do it and this is my first attempt at masking. I used a picture of a Las Vegas Red Rock Canyon road that I took about a year ago as the background. The car itself was photographed in Calabogie Ontario.

Here is it – the backgroung image has been HDR with 5 pictures +/- 2EV with Photomatix. The foreground image is a single picture taken with a Tamron super wide angle 10-24 at 10mm.

The Prefect: Nikon D40x – f4, 1/2000th, ISO200, Tamron 10-24mm at 10mm.
Background: Nikon D300s – 5 picture +/- 2EV, F11, ISO200, Tamron 10-24mm at 10mm.

Processed with CS5, Photomatix, OnOne Perfect Mask and Topaz Adjust.

Really cool image Sylvain, love discovering a new technique and revisiting old photos that had potential, great job!!

  • It’s really cool to discover new techniques. I still need to work on this (you never finish learning anyway… LOL). Hopefully I’ll go back in my older pictures and find something deserving to be worked on!
    Thanks!!!

exciting photo, can’t imagine how you did this.

  • Thank you!. I tried many different techniques before and I always ended up with pieces of the car missing, or the backgroung not fitting or colours being wrong. It took me a little while, but it was fun to play around.
