Old Captain

William Hallatt

Old Captain

This man favoured central Odessa and our paths crossed more than once during my stay there. This morning, however, I couldn’t resist sneaking a shot as he snoozed there on his bench. I’m very glad I did as he shaved off that magnificent beard no more than a week later…

I expect he has some tales to tell…a lonely life maybe. Like Captain Kat from Dylan Thomas’s poem ‘Undermilk Wood’.
His shopping for one nestled by his side…perhaps his rum. I suppose we are always making assumptions in life…judging books by their covers. There for the grace of God etc… I find this picture sad too. It would be great for a prompt….as a creative writing exercise. Very well captured, a window on life.

  • William Hallatt replied

Thank you for such a great comment Anni. I was working in Odessa, Ukraine (on the Black Sea, which is why I always thought he was an ex-seaman) and this old guy was a regular face in this particular park. Every morning at around 9, he’d be having a nap on one of the benches, positively reeking of vodka :) I couldn’t resist taking this snap though, but would never have had the courage had he been awake.

There comes a time in all our lives where we come to a path, that splits in to two different directions, and you say to yourself what was I put on this earth for?......what am I supposed to do in life?..... Well I think this photo answers part of that question you are asking yourself, to see such beauty like this must mean 1 thing, and only 1 thing, is that the fist path you have already accomplished, because you have found your …..“Heart….and….soul”…..from such a great image……….!
