Moon Rise - 6 July 2009
Testing Testing one two three….
This is not cropped… It has been darkened in photoshop but the overall colours have not changed. It was darkened because the moon rises here while the sun is still up.
This was literally taken only half an hour ago (from the time I write this).
at 5:52pm on 6 July 2009 (AEST) the moon was shot using a 650-1300mm Phoenix Lens (not as crappy as some made out to be by the looks of things).
This is the first time I used the lens – and lucky the OM-4/3 fitting turned up today – just in time for the full moon (actually it’s only 99.4% illuminated)!
There’s no tricks in the colour here as said above (other than the darkening). The moon appears red/yellow as the sun sets and the camera picks that up nicely.
I have worked out I need a new tripod – the lens weighs 2kg!!! And at full extension the tripod was creaking a little.
Plus I’d like small adjusts.
If you’re looking at this photo and want to comment – feel free. I need plenty of advice for this new lens.
Just some info on the lens:
It’s a 650-1300mm lens but has fixed aperture. At 1300mm it is F/16 and there’s nothing you can do about it. So rather than paying about $5000 (probably a lot more) this one was well under $500 – but you have to live with fixed aperture.
It has a T-mount and I have two adapters required for the Olympus 4/3 – the T-mount to Olympus OM and then from OM to 4/3.
I have taken some shots of birds on powerlines – about 500m away as though I was standing next to them. I took a photo of a forest fire 15km away!!! Though as yet I am still working on clarity.
This is one of about 15 shots I took tonight of the moon – it was hard to choose which was the best – but I like this one – it’s quite clear and I feel this lens has just earned my respect!
Thanks for looking :)
Camera: Olympus E-30
ISO 320

WOW!! Excellent, I’m so glad your new lens is good, you MUST upload some photos of birds I’m DYING to see them! Hmm maybe I should buy one of these lenses…..
Paul Davis replied
It’s going to take some getting used to I can tell – but it has a huge physical range. It’s now a matter of trying to make larger distance photos look less washed out (I have some plans for this). But along with a good tripod and some strong muscles I’d say this is a good companion with a digital camera :)

Paul, bloody great shot mate. Uncropped as well, fave’d for sure!
Paul Davis replied
Thank you so much Christopher :)
When you look through the lens at the moon it feels like you can pick it up and take bites of its cheesy goodness – it really feels like you’re that close.

only 2kg?! omg! did you leave off a nought?! i have much shorter lenses that weigh more! this sounds great! it’s just what i was wishing for when i looked up tonight and saw this moon! beautiful work!
Paul Davis replied
Thanks mate :) – I may have been a little light on the 2kg part… But it’s what it says on the specifications…
I read on so many sites of people mocking these lenses – yet so many have not tried them. I agree, they’re limited – but so is my 105mm macro, so is my 14-54mm… all lenses are limited by their very definition. Next test will be for wild life – but will get the tripod first. Thanks for your input on your other comment :)
