M&M Magical Madness
Apart from the alliteration – this is a fairly common waste of good chocolate (though it’s still edible).
Watch as the colours begin to run….
This experiment can be tried anywhere – so long you have M&Ms or similar multi coloured candy.
Colours have not been altered – but the photo was sharpened. I haven’t got the hang of this camera or how to edit the photos yet – it’s really depressing – this photo would be very different… but it’s a learning curve. So I am just upping them anyway in hope to see advice come through.
This photo is not doctored – it is as it is because M&Ms have so much colour in them already (yucky).
For the beginners – Camera is an Olympus e30 and lens is a Sigma 105mm macro.
I’ve had this camera for about one and a bit days – It’s like starting all over again!

M&M Magical Madness belongs to the following groups:

Wow, you love your macros dont you :P This looks really cool.
Paul Davis replied
Macro is my favourite type of photography, and I’ve only been doing it a little while. I splashed out last year on the Sigma lens… But it’s so used now – I love it.
dimsim
are they in water? or on wet paper? or … ? it’s very vivid!
Paul Davis replied
In water (don’t want to give away all my trade secrets hehe). When you say it’s very vivid – is that a good thing? I think I will re-do this shot soon and do it under natural light conditions without the flash firing, which is why I think it’s like this. But the colours aren’t natural anyway (well, the camera doesn’t know that, but the M&Ms certianly don’t have natural colours hehe). It’s a fun experiment none the less.
Matthew Chambe...
Hahah, chromatography is wonderful for getting vivid colours. Excellent photograph :)
Paul Davis replied
Oh no… it has a name haha… I actually think I knew that for some strange reason… But I just call it M&M magic these days… through with big words hehe… people just label me a geek… Thanks heaps for the awesome comment.
Jonathan Dower
really very awesome shot! M&M magic indeed…
u should put it in the experimental group :)
Paul Davis replied
Thanks for the awesome comment :) I have already added it to experimental – just waiting on approval :)
dimsim
is it a good thing? i love the bright colours :) the actual texture of the smarties is a bit yuk :) it’s not a pic i’d put on my wall, but fascinating and bright :)
Paul Davis replied
Thanks for clearing that up :)
Sensiworld

Paul Davis replied
Thank you Sylvia :)
Lindsay Oram
wow dude. This rocks. Did you add it to the bright bright colours challenge. Cant remember what its called. :(
Paul Davis replied
I did not add it to the bright colours challenge – oh no…. Where is it?
AJM Photography
Ah yes, my kinda stuff! It’s sort of the photographer’s version of Diet Coke & Mentos…
Paul Davis replied
hahaha! Nice one – though, funny enough, I’ve never tried that… You’re inspiring me already!!!
Randi Bailey
Like the experimentation-sometimes new cameras bring us into great new territory…you don’t always have to be in control. This is good!
Paul Davis replied
Thanks for that Randi… I fully agree – and a little bit of serendipity goes a very long way :)
richardseah
Great idea and amazing image. How do you do it? I cannot quite figure out from reading your text. Do you melt them?
Paul Davis replied
Hi Richard, just take a few M&Ms of your choice of colour (preferably different ones) and put them into a bowl of water and leave them for about 45 seconds. The colour begins to run from their shells and merges in the middle or which ever one leaks fastest. I expect to see some M&M photos from you now that you know hehe – ooooh we could have a whole group devoted to M&M photography >:-P I hope that clears it all up for you :)
richardseah
Thanks Paul for the super quick response. But I don’t eat M&Ms. As you noted, the colors… Let’s see if I am willing to waste a dollar or so for the sake of photography. Once again, great concept and great image!
Paul Davis replied
Thanks Richard – it’s ok, you don’t eat the ones that have been in the water anyway :) Another final tip – I used a porcelain white bowl for this experiment. But I guess experiment with textures and colours to get different results. The water on;y needs to be deep enough to cover the M&Ms with them maybe 2-3mm under the surface. If people are trying this can you BM so I can see the results and maybe we can link them all somehow :)
Gail Bridger
Very cool effects and beautiful!! :)
Paul Davis replied
Thank you Gail for the lovely comment :)
georgiegirl
I love the colours! What a groovy idea… This would make a cool Happy Easter card!!!
I expect M&Ms still taste ok after a bath!! Red had a shower the other day and he still thinks he’s pretty good!
Paul Davis replied
Haha…. I personally don’t eat them after their bath, but I guess water and chocolate isn’t the worst. Well, happy Easter to you georgiegirl :) Thanks for the comment.
