There’s a fair few around here – but some just really need our help – the ticks this year are bad :(
Conrad Stryker
Usually don’t comment on or favorite photography … but this little sucker’s adorable. Never really thought I’d say that about a bat. Good capture.
Paul Davis replied
Thanks conrad – great comment. Very pleased to have you favourite a photo :) Most people don’t get up close and personal to these guys, in fact some people fear them – but they’re absolutely (as you say) adorable!
Helen Corr
how beautiful!
Paul Davis replied
You should definitely go see them if you’re ever here – very much worth it. From the responses here I might just go back and ask if I can do more up close and personal photos with the animals to get some better info out on these poorly understood mammals.

Thanks Kimberleigh – most people don’t see bats as ‘cute’ – but they really are :)

I’m so glad your photo is letting others see that fruit bats really are sweet. Linneus (founder of scientific naming system) originally classed them with the Primates – monkeys with wings. They sound and act a lot like monkeys with wings, rather than the scary beings some imagine. Great photo, sooo cute.
Paul Davis replied
Thank you so much for your kind comments Miesha – it’s funny you should comment on this today – because I went to the batreach centre today to say hi :) I know they used to be classified with primates – perhaps lemurs – but let’s face it – classifying is something humans do to create order – I have a hard time believing many of the modern classifications that are out there – and above all, these guys are so unique and amazing. Maybe they are monkeys with wings – but either way, I’m proud to see them in my city :)
Colleen Battis...
