In 1964 the U.S. Army signed a 65-year lease with the State of Hawaii to use these valleys for live fire training purposes. 45 years of environmental abuse has left the valleys badly scarred with few trees and countless unexploded ordinance littering the landscape.
A recently completed court ordered Environmental Impact Statement by the Army suggests its preference to continue live fire training here. There are alternative sites avaiable.
This land contains Native Hawaiian culturally sensitive and sacred sites as well as endangered species and plants.
As a former Makua resident I would love to see these beautiful valleys returned to the stewardship of the State and become a State Park for the use and enjoyment of all the people of Hawaii.

Stunning collection ( it really doesn’t look like a good place for live fire training. )
