IN YOU

I have always believed in the spiritual world, in reincarnation & souls being able to reach out to loved ones after they pass, just to let us know all is well. Also, I always visualise my home country of New Zealand when I read these verses, it was written from my heart, which always lies there.

The day my father passed away in Auckland (NZ), my family were unable to contact me here in Melbourne (Aust) to give me the sad news. But my Dad, who did not believe as I did, always promised that he’d let me know himself if there was a way. The morning of his death, I wrote this poem, it took me all day & I owe my boss much thanks for leaving me undisturbed to do this in work hours (she knew something was up, just neither of us knew what). When my family finally reached me, the last verse was able to be finished properly & the piece finally made sense to me.

Another friend set this to music, I wish I’d got a copy of the recording we made of it, maybe one day we’ll cross paths again & sing together.

I love you Dad!

I see you through bright water
on the threshold, hesitating -
You stand there in clear starlight,
reflected in bright water.
I see you in the winter snow
drifting slowly earthward -
You float above serenely
framed by winter snow.

I find you ‘mongst wildflowers
smelling sweetly their perfume -
You shine like dew on petals,
hidden deep in wildflowers.
I find you in the red earth
giving of your life to all -
You radiate in silent beauty,
aglow within red earth.

I hear you ‘cross blue ocean
in the rhythym of the tides -
Your soul flows ever boundless,
onward through blue oceans
I hear your voice in windsong
racing over rugged hills -
You harmonise in tones of Truth,
a melody of windsong.

I feel you in high mountains
up-reaching to the sky -
You join with earth and heaven,
connected by high mountains.
I feel in you a heart’s love
for creation all around -
You stand so chaste, so pure,
pulsing in the heart’s love.

I’ll meet with you in Love’s hall
above the wild earth -
Your soul will touch my soul,
remembering in Love’s hall.
I’ll meet with you in God’s heart
when earthly days are done -
You’ll greet me at the stairway,
walking side to side by God’s heart.

I find you ‘mongst wildflowers
smelling sweetly their perfume -
You shine like dew on petals,
hidden deep in wildflowers.

Beautiful words, Sioux. I lost my dad in 1987 so I can relate to this. My condolences go out to Ellen.

  • skyhorse replied

Thanks Rachael, there is nothing quite the same as losing a parent, you have to admit you’re “on your own” at some whole new level & then there are all the things you’d usually run to the phone to share with them … you know what i mean

Thanks Marvin, it was both easy & a struggle to write, I now laugh that it is my only piece of “ghost writing” (my dad would see the humour too)

my Mum passed away a few years back too, the world is an emptier place without them both, sometimes I rush to the phone to tell mum something new & then catch myself … years of habit that I just can’t break that easily. I’m glad if this poem helped in some way, I’m pretty sure that’s what Dad would have intended :)
