PTC Carousel 1
My “holy grail” – a stunning, fully restored, fully operation Philidelphia Toboggan Company carousel AND it’s right here in Melbourne !!!
I’ve loved the PTC carousels from the very first horse I ever saw – they capture all the fiery energy of the horse (and other animals they create) and also fire the imagination of the riders with the range of fantastical steeds to choose from.
If you live here, go see this stunning piece of art at Luna Park, St Kilda – go for a ride while you’re there :-D

You are right, it is a beauty …
skyhorse replied
yeah, but I have to admit to total bias when it comes to PTC horses!

Great clarity and colour

When i was still young, i always used to love this! Reminds me of my youth :))
Beautiful image! (Thanks for your friendly com.)

Really beautiful carousel – how wonderful that you can photograph it fully. The vintagew ones I recently shot were enclosed in wooden buildings with window openings. I realize that it protects them from theft and from the elements, but makes it more difficult to photograph. Great capture!
WayoftheWarrior
Those are classics and vintage

I love stuff like this! Great shot!
skyhorse replied
You are too kind, but these carousels are just wonderful & make such great images
Sassafras
This is a real treasure. So beautiful to behold.
Carousels delight the eye and the soul, especially when they are as well preserved as this one.
Peace,
Sassi
skyhorse replied
Sassi, you got it in one – a delight for the eyes & the soul indeed! I may have to borrow that phrase :-D
Sassafras
Go right ahead!!
Peace :)

Love these beautiful carousel, they never loose their charm, nice capture!
skyhorse replied
thank you Tracy – the old carousels were just amazing works of art, it’s lovely to find them lovingly restored like this one

Lovely example of a PTC and if you thought the ponies on these were awesome you should have seen the Stein and Goldstein huge powerful looking animals!
skyhorse replied
I know the Stein/Goldstein horses, they are stunning, but we don’t have any of those here in Australia (I collect carousel history books), but Daniel Muller & Gustav Dentzel are my absolute fav creators :D

Great pic of a fabulous Carousel my friend…....I bet you wish you had this one in your stable! :-0
skyhorse replied
I’d give my eye-teeth for just one PTC horse … or a masterpiece by Daniel Muller, for that I’d pay real $$$ LOL

I like this. I have a similiar photograph of my own of an old carosel taken at Semaphore in South Australia. Well done.
skyhorse replied
One day I’d like to travel around Australia just to visit all our old carousels … I think we have a lot of hidden treasures here!

Oh how this brings back memories, as a youth age 16 I hired on with the carnival visiting my home town, part of my task was assisting the erection and assembly of an original type Merry-go-round, it didn’t pay much but all the free passes to rides came with the benefits. grabbing onto someone elses comment Classic, Vintage! Thanks for sharing! paul
skyhorse replied
you were a carni ?! LOL
For me carousels were a way to be horseback when there were no ponies available – the horseloving child’s delight & they inspired a true passion for the artwork of the classic, historic carousels
windwalker
taking me straight back to childhood, such a beautiful clear sharp photograph

Beautiful Carousel, Gee you used to do quarter horses, and now your down to the nickle and dime ones. OK bad pun, especially for you down under,,,doesn’t make any pence at all does it? But anyone looking for international cameradradre deserves what she gets. Fantastic snap, looks like a wide angle lens. :)
skyhorse replied
hahaha, I’d give you my 2 cents worth but Australia scraped that coin a decade back LOL
Carousel horses have been a passion since childhood, they were stand-ins for the pony I never had (shed tears here) but I actually love their artistry & history, there’s a large selection of carousel books on the shelves – right next to the QH books!
skyhorse replied
PS this was taken using a “point & shoot” Pentax :)
imageofpix4u
Really. I have a nice pint n shoot Pentax IQ Zoom 200 (48×200mm) that I picked up at a thrift store for 8 dollars. (Hard times had me sell my beloved Nikon SLR for a tank of Petrol) such is disability and poverty. (Lord taught me humility too!). If I were 20 years younger I’d like to try carving one from a block.
skyhorse replied
pretty sure I have a book on “how to” for carousel horses (or rocking horses) – poverty seems to be the way of the world at present :(
imageofpix4u
Yeah well now that I’m eat up with arthritis,,,and disabled,,,I think maybe soap carving might be the only medium I could pick on. LOL
skyhorse replied
ouch! my mum suffered from arthrictic problems for many years, it certainly does limit physical activities of that nature – soap horses would sell though LOL

fabulous I adore these. the one at Canberra used to be at Luna Park [Melbourne ]and was owned by my friends Father she used to have to paint the horses, and got into trouble for painting them the wrong colours..I took a pic or a few for her while I was there a couple of years ago, for some reason it wasn’t open that particular day….
skyhorse replied
Luna Park Melbourne only operates Friday nites & weekends unless there are school holidays :(
Glad you liked the shot, would love to see some of the Canberra one you mention
