Icons on our bedroom chest,
Our wedding pictures hold
The ashes of our dreams, like
The relics of dead saints,

And we say prayers for loved ones,
Plucked suddenly and forever
From our midst by…
We were told it was God’s will,

As were the ineluctable
Twists of fortune that reduced
Our sky-castles to ruins
And left us to fear growing old,

As we fear for our children,
Who snarl through locked doors
At a world on its deathbed,
Breathing its last hymns,

And I take communion—on the rocks
With a dash of bitters—looking again
At our wedding pictures, wondering,
Could this really have been God’s will?
