An explanation to the title:

Bipolar is for most people a genetic predisposition, and often this predisposition is crystallized in childhood into the “disorder” by sustained traumatic stress.

Bipolar does not have a cure. It’s a genetic predispoation for the brain chemistry to react in certain ways under certain circumstances, so it’s not even a disease, rather a syndrome.

Given that, suggesting that bipolars should “think themselves better”, “Take responsibility” or “cheer up”, is every bit as offensive as accusing someone in a wheelchair of being lazy.

There is no choice in being bipolar, and an individuals ability to cope with it varies. Choice, responsibility, attitude are all completely irrelevant concepts on all but a subjective level for the individual concerned.

Clinical depression is not a matter of choosing to see the world in any kind of way, it’s your brain being flooded with chemicals which promote self-destructive behaviour and thinking. It’s not “Oh, I’m feeling a bit under the weather…”, it’s “My life is over and I have the incredible urge to die or even kill myself and I can’t stand it much more!!!”

Mania is a bit more complicated. Mania is basically the brain being flooded with chemicals that promote alertness and restlessness- a natural amphetamine.

Mania can be either expressed creatively or destructively. Mania accompanied by insomnia can often lead to a pseudo-psychosis (hearing and seeing) things

So basically, no amount of tapping your ruby slippers together is going to get anyone back to Kansas.

Right, I’m off to look up the Wicked Witch… who knows if I’ll be back to this account… I’m not intending to right now.
