A Disturbing Dream

the narration to the dream i had a few nights ago
it troubles me

The heads of the little girls float in place upon the surface of the river
Their long hair moving like some unnatural algae

Did I do it?

There is an axe in my hand
Blood on my clothes

Where are the bodies?

The bodies are in the belfry
The vulture has not touched the gifts

Why does he refuse my hospitality?

The sound of bells echoes from the tower
I hear the cries of the mothers

Have they seen what I have done?

They are blind to my work
They continue their masquerade ball

Are they happy?

The heads won’t sink
The current won’t pull them

How long will they remain?

The axe is now clean
Crimson grass covering soft ground

Why won’t the vulture speak?

There is no path to the church
The belfry is silent

Did I hear bells?

Too much to do
I welcome sleep
