Chief is a wild Sulpher Springs Mustang stallion. I photograph him every year on my sojourn to Return to Freedom (RTF), a wild horse sanctuary, in Lompoc California. After being round-up by the BLM a number of years ago, Chief had been horribly abused and then rescued by RTF. Despite his chaotic and violent history, his spirit was never broken and he is a truly noble, majestic and magnificent stallion.
He is my absolute favourite stallion at RTF and I never tire of photographing him year after year. Because I keep returning to RTF every year, patiently and quietly hanging out in his “space”, he is letting me get a tad closer each time I am there…..and he no longer runs away. I am hoping that one of the times when I return to RTF, he will let me get close enough to touch him.
