This handsome stallion was the alpha male in a small herd of horses that we happened upon in the BLM Antelope Complex / Antelope Valley just across the highway from the tiny town of Cherry Creek. Cherry Creek is about 1 hour north of Ely, Nevada, USA.
This beautiful herd was very comfortable with us getting very close to them. There was only one foal but the mares in the herd looked young….but beautiful!!!!
Many of the horses in the Antelope Complex / Antelope Valley had been round-up in Feb 2011 leaving many many horses alone …. their families senselessly torn away from them …..young stallions, mares and young foals were left to wander the vally seeking comfort and refuge with new families. Some herds thankfully stayed intact while many others found new herds or have stayed alone.
On July 20 2011, the BLM started another round-up in the adjoining Triple B complex and finished the round-up at the end of August 2011.
I do hope that many of the horses I was able to photograph with Jeanne Nations in the Antelope Valley and Triple B complex escaped this sensless and unnecessary round-up.
