Liberty is a palamino stallion living in the Antelope Complex (Antelope Valley) just north of Ely, Nevada, USA with his new family. He is an absolutely gorgeous stallion and was very comfortable with us getting close as he and his family quietly grazed amid the sage brush.

Many of the horses in the Antelope Complex were round-up in Feb 2011 leaving many horses alone …. their families senselessly and inhumanely torn away from them …..lone young stallions, mares and young foals wandering the vally seeking comfort and refuge with new families.

On July 20 2011, the BLM started another round-up in the Antelope Valley and the adjoining Triple B complex. The BLM is planning to round-up 1,700 horses as it says the 1.3 to 1.7 million acres of BLM land can only sustain 500 – 700 horses. It is heartbreaking to hear that so many horses that are fit and healthy are going to be round-up …chased by a helicopter for miles through desert and scorching temperature …..some will be run to their death….others will be injured and hurt……many more will be ripped apart from their familial herds.

It will just break my heart if many of the horses I was able to photograph with Jeanne Nations in the Antelope and Triple B complexes are included in this sensless and unnecessary round-up.

What was prophetic was that Jeanne and I happened a sign that said “This land is your land” …then why do our voices go largely unheard in trying to protect and save these magnificent creatures????

A great shame to see those horses leave Sue. Stunning Stallion in a gorgeous setting, is that a little bird I see just behind him, lovely capture and work, regards, Mark

  • Thank you kindly Mark…..very much and greatly appreciated!! Yes that is a little bird in the bush behind him. Within minutes of us starting to shoot this lovely lad, there were so many of these birds by him and I didn’t even notice until I started viewing my images!

It is a great shame to see them inhumanely chased and round up from their homes and families….it is heart breaking.

I swear I commented on this before :)!

  • LOL!!! Maybe it is those gremlins running around that erased it or something!!!! I did update the commentary in this image as the round-up started July 20th in the areas I shot in with Jeanne. I do hope that this magnificent fellow was spared.
