I love your nerdyness. and this pic, but I am going to have to teach you how to layer and remove vehicles.

  • sjem © replied

My nerdiness is designed to annoy danny. I think it will succeed.

I coulda taken the cars out but I like them as part of the composition.

Bless you, the tendrils are my favorite bit too.

I like the tendrils of the trees shadows on the road too.

Those aren’t tendrils of shadowy goodness.
They are tendrils of shadowy evil eminating from the camera that sjem is holding and over powering his mind.

  • sjem © replied

    I like that analogy.

All i can focus on is the skate-able sculpture in the front there

  • sjem © replied

Ha – see those bollards ? They were added very quickly after the sculpture was installed. Mainly because there’s a pointy bit at eye height. No visible skate tracks yet.

It`s begging to be ridden, such obvious lines too..

I give it less than a week

I wonder what they’re talking about in this, ‘contextual dialogue’, these facetted glass facades and the established trees in the park on the opposite side of the road?

  • sjem © replied

Hey kits, I wrote that little blurb – let me expand some.

The elevation is essentially a large glass expanse that has been broken up into an over-scaled composition which mimics the ashlar stone walls of a nearby much older building on campus. Contextual dialogue is a reference to the way that the glass reflects the park opposite in a series of vignettes, pieces of branch, pieces of sky, pieces of grass. From within the building, the feeling of being amongst the trees, instead of next to a road is also created. The glass has also been printed with a digitised pattern that reduces solar glare within the building and creates shadows that are very much like dappled light from beneath a tree.

Shit thats a school?! So what is it that public thingy i go to everyday cause it don’t look like that!
    ....Nice Capture! ;P

And i’m with Kits, i see you have been brushing up on the artistic wank…er…discourse. But…i do see what you mean…and its pretty!

  • sjem © replied

Well, this is Melbourne Grammar, they make Prime Ministers there apparently.

The artistic wank was just for danny – I know he loves it.

Love it, it’s all very abstract isn’t it but I was thinking more along the lines of maybe…....”epilepsy anyone?”, it’s like an assuault of the shadows, inside and out. Also, the building reminds me of one of those insect motels, with all the different viewing chambers, etc.

Not sure if a building should engage in dialogue with the park across the road. I think the park would tell it to shut the fuck up.

  • sjem © replied

Trees are so rude aren’t they ?

  • Frank Stillitano

    Frank Stillitano

Yeah but with just cause. They are probably annoyed that the same species that cut down their neighbors have now put up fake images of them to converse with!
I’d be rude about it too.

  • Frank Stillitano

    Frank Stillitano

    Nice photo BTW!
I noticed from the JWA website that they designed a couple of the buildings here in Adelaide I was lucky enough to study in. Some good stuff!

The tress would probably also have preferred a wall with better environmental performance than a 3 storey glass facade with almost no sun-shading! By the look of the shadows it doesn’t face south either.

  • sjem © replied

Can you tell I really like this building ? You’d think I work for them or something ! It one the RAIA Medal this year – which means it was basically judged as the best building in Victoria for 2008.

I think this building has become a splinter in your mind Franky.

It faces east, so it gets morning sun. By the looks of it, I’d say its a high performance laminated glass with properties designed to reduce solar gain internally, thus the greenish tint. The steel framing elements are also quite deep and would act as shading devices like a traditional bris soleil.

  • Frank Stillitano

    Frank Stillitano

Splinter in the mind…hey, I like that! Might make a good tee shirt.
My mind is always full of splinters. I think it’s the only way to encourage discourse and also to keep learning.
N.B. Will have to look up bris soleil now! Woohoo

  • sjem © replied

Heh – the splinter thing is straight from The Matrix. I think Morpheous says it to Neo.

I’m stoked that this image has generated so much discussion. Well worth it.

Me too, that’s just what good art should do.

bris soleil was a bit of an anti-climax though, I must say…

I do love those shadows leading up to the building, they make this framing extra special!

You know I’m going to have to investigate this school next time I’m in Melbourne….heh. As for them making Prime Ministers, they should spend more time making decent people instead :)

alright, what about stickking one through the big bit of glass on the secondf floor and making it look like its dangling dangerously. put mculky calcan behind the wheel, and there it is- a multi purpose comp entry that is sure to come into the top 3 in any photo comp, whatever the by-line, leaving you osama bin fucking fully laden with valuable prizegoods to flog on e-bay, henceforth leaving your pockets jammed with cash to flit on ‘pampers newborn’.

    winner.
