“HISTORY TEACHES EVERYTHING,
INCLUDING THE FUTURE”

Lamartine

This amazing stone, remnant of medieval punishment in the form of stocks, is in Dartmoor in Devon.

I use a Lumix panasonic point and shoot camera

Wow. You read about this type of punishment in history books, even more recent than medieval times. This photo illustrates how uncomfortable, then painful, this would be. Nice find.

  • thanks so much …..yes it looks really uncomfortable!!

Still happens in my country, for mentally disturbed people whose family cannot afford hospital.

Which appendages went in those holes? Feet or hands?

  • LoL! usually the head went in those stocks – and then people though rotten things at the person who was imprisoned in that. You’re right this one looks like the hands went in there

The person would lie on his back or stomach with his arms stretched above his head in the locks. That is how it worked. Very cruel. Fantastic capture!!!

  • Dear Deborah, thankyou so very much for including my photo in your wonderful group, also I really appreciate that information on how it worked.

    WOW!
    What a bold statement!
    Great lighting & clarity.
    I can’t believe this is actually used…horrific!
It even looks like there’s a ghastly facial expression on the side of the stone!

  • Thanks so much for your comments Lacey, yes it is a horrible medieval punishment.
