I am in love with the fact that someone remebers who Marx was!!! he may be considered radical by some, but he had some good ideas, not the least of which was that we suffered from a lack of class consciousness that sees working class people imagining themselves to be middle class and hopelessly unaware of their real standing – I have friends with no bank balance that vote liberal because that is how they wish to be seen … sad … they talk about how homeless people are lazy, refugees greedy and the unemployed, well! etc. etc. etc. (we’ve all heard it) ...

Thank you both. Its true how unaware people are of their real standing and with this economic meltdown many are a heartbeat away from the bottom. Perhaps most people will start to realise that its in their interest to at least soften the landing of those losing their jobs and vastly improving conditions for the longterm unemployed. Ultimately we need to rethink the way we view work and acknowledging the unpaid work of the unwaged. The present system of adding monetary value to Commonwealth resources and then trickling down to the people living here doesn’t work.

Hear hear. Government’s investing in banks and major companies just seems like a reluctant dip into a type of socialism. The will for some common sense reassessments about how the money goes around is a bit mind-boggling. Bloody hard not to regress to believing in conspiracy theories. But I suppose when it’s only 5 stalwarts wanting answers outside a Centrelink “They” are just not going to pay attention. Three million French hit the streets when their government announces big rescue packages for the finance sector. Now that has a politician paying attention. But there it is. The people keep accepting shite from their government and they deserve everything they get.

Thanks for the feature. Newcastle Trades Hall is organising a forum later this year to discuss what the unemployed really want and how to get it with the resources this country has got so if you are from out of town and need a billet to attend then contact Gary there.

A great photo-journalism shot ! I don’t like many parts of the current economic system. But the people at the top of the tree, enjoying the finest fruits of capitalism, will never relinquish their power and control. So we have to try as much as possible to build our own ladders and set our own path to success – whatever defines ” success ” for the individual.
